Joliet Iron Works Historic Site

This afternoon I visited the ruins of the Joliet Iron Works at Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, in Joliet, Illinois.  Built in the 1870’s to produce iron helping meet demand during the industrial revolution.  During this time the state of Illinois trailed only the state of Pennsylvania in iron production.

I would not have known what most of the ruins were if not for the interpretive panels.  The picture on the left is what remains of the “dust catcher” and the mass in the picture on the right is called a salamander, which is a mass of iron and impurities that formed inside the furnace and occasionally had to be removed.

I can only imagine that the noise that came from this building, the gas engine house, must have been easily heard at the Joliet Prison which is the building in the distance.

The plant was operating as recently as the 1920’s.  Hard to imagine considering the advanced state of deterioration.

The only sign of life I found at the plant was this rodent.  I think it was looking for something to eat.

This afternoon I made a brief visit to the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Will County, Illinois. I’ve visited several National Cemeteries in my travels but I think this is the first time I’ve visited on when the grounds were snow covered.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cremation Scatter Garden in any cemetery before.  I think I would be a little apprehensive about  walking in the garden because you never know what you might stick to the bottom of your shoes!

One of the advantages of the snowcover is being able to document the visitors to the cemetery.  Quite a lot of animal tracks around.

I found it a little coincidental when I drove past the Pearl Harbor memorial with the eagle atop the monument.  As I was driving by the memorial with the eagle at the top, the song “Broken Wings” by Mr. Mister was playing on the radio.
