Today I did a tour of Cumberland, Monroe and Barren Counties in Kentucky.  I started out by visiting the site of the Civil War “Skirmish at Norris Branch in Cumberland County.”  This was part of John Hunt Morgan’s Raid through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.  There were few casualties on either side. The skirmish was mainly a diversion while the bulk of Morgan’s troops were crossing the nearby Cumberland River.

Quite by accident I came across a historical marker which says this is the birthplace of Joel Cheek, the founder of Maxwell House Coffee.  The historical marker says that Theodore Roosevelt created the phrase “good to the last drop” after drinking a cup of Maxwell House.

I next stopped in the town of Tompkinsville in Monroe County.  The town was raided by John Hunt Morgan and his men on July 9, 1862.  The courthouse was burned by Confederates on April 22, 1863.
