Today’s photo was taken from in front of the statue of St. Martin of Tours, the namesake of St. Martinsville, Louisiana.

Cypress Island Preserve

My last stop of the day was an unplanned one.  One of the employees at Evangeline-Longfellow State Park recommended I stop here.  Cypress Island is managed by the Nature Conservancy and appears to be a popular fishing spot.

I ran into a couple of hikers making the entire loop around Lake Martin, which actually seems to be more of a swamp than a lake.  I didn’t leave myself enough time to do the whole thing so I hiked about 1/4 or so of the trail and then back.  About half of the trail is actually a gravel road so I got to see most of the preserve.

Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site

Just north of St. Martinsville, in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana is Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site which has been set up to show what life was like for the early Creole and Acadian settlers.  This cabin is a typical structure of the earliest settlers.
