San Felasco Hammock

I visited the third National Natural Landmark located in Alachua County, Florida.  San Felasco Hammock Preserve is also a state park.  I hiked for about 3 hours.  I have to say I liked this one the least of the 3.  There were several sinkholes in the park and I did see a few alligators.

Devil’s Millhopper

Although difficult to tell by this photo, you are looking at a 120 foot deep x 500 feet across sinkhole.  Devil’s Millhopper is a Geologic State Park located in Alachua County, Florida.  Like Paynes Prairie, it is also a National Natural Landmark.

This picture  was taken from the bottom looking up.  I have to imagine this is one of the most significant elevation changes in the state of Florida.  I was startled to find myself out of breath climbing up the staircase out of the hole.  This never happens in Florida!

Paynes Prairie Part II

I woke up early this morning and made a stop at the observation deck at the rest area on I-75 south in Alachua County, Florida.  The observation deck overlooks Paynes Prairie State Park, which I hiked yesterday.  The fog was amazing.

I made a second visit to the park, this time entering from the north and hiked the La Chua Trail.

Here I finally found some alligators.

The most interesting feature was the Alachua Sink.

Paynes Prairie

I spent a few hours hiking Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in Alachua County, Florida.  There were signs warning of alligators and bison.  I found this exciting but here is the “wild” life I actually encountered:

This last animal could not be bothered to even acknowledged me.  It chomped away without even blinking.

The prairie besides being a state park is also a National Natural Landmark.
