Mount Mitchell

The observation deck in this photo is the highest point in the United States east of the Mississippi River.  It is located within Mount Mitchell State Park in Yancey County, North Carolina along the Blue Ridge Parkway near mile marker 355.  Mt. Mitchell is the first designated State Park in North Carolina and is also a National Natural Landmark.

One can drive nearly to the summit and take a short walk up the paved trail to the observation deck.  This just didn’t seem right to me so I parked at the base of the mountain in Pisgah National Forest and hiked to the 6,684′ summit.

Earlier in the morning I was in Asheville and told someone what I was planning to do later in the day.  He said “there is nothing special about Mount Mitchell.  There won’t be much to see when you get to the top.”  Maybe the scenery is a bit lacking, but the fog/clouds was like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie.  Very surreal, and it was hard to believe it was August.

When I got to the bottom after finishing the hike I was asked if I saw any bears.  Apparently a bear attacked a troop of Boy Scouts a few weeks past.  Perhaps it was better I didn’t know.

Mount Mitchell got its name from Dr. Elisha Mitchell.  Mitchell died while trying to verify the elevation of the then unnamed peak in 1857.  He is buried next to the observation deck, which only adds to the spookiness of this site.

Craggy Gardens

I spent the day hiking once again along the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I parked near mile marker 368 and hiked first to Douglas Falls.

On the return hike I took in the Craggy Gardens.

The views from the top of the Craggy Pinnacle were exceptional.

All totaled I hiked approximately 11.4 miles today.
